Cycling in the Lot Valley
Cycling in the Lot Valley (Vallée du Lot) in France is considered one of the best cycling experiences in the country—and for good reason. Here’s why (don’t forget you can hire electric bikes from us here):
Stunning Scenery The Lot Valley is rich in natural beauty. The River Lot winds through lush countryside, vineyards, limestone cliffs, and wildflower meadows. Enjoy panoramic views of the Causses du Quercy, a UNESCO Global Geopark, and visit historic stone villages perched on hillsides (such as Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, among the most beautiful in France).
Cultural and Historical Richness Medieval towns like Cahors offer Gothic and Romanesque architecture, markets, and cathedrals. Châteaux and prehistoric caves (such as Pech Merle) are easily reachable by bike. There is a strong local identity with Occitan traditions still visible in music, food, and festivals.
Cycling-Friendly Infrastructure The Véloroute Vallée du Lot (V86) is a dedicated cycling route that’s well-marked and mostly follows quiet country roads and riverbanks. Low traffic volumes on the areas rural roads make it safe and enjoyable, even for beginners. There is a maze of hundreds of kilometres of off-road trails ideal for all-terrain bikes, many of these trails link local villages, historic sites and natural features. A new Voie Verte (Greenway) is being established along the River Lot between Cahors and Figeac, which will be entirely off-road and follows the picturesque route of the old railway line.
Incredible Food and Wine The area is home to Cahors AOC wines, especially the bold Malbec reds. Local specialties like duck confit, truffles, and Rocamadour cheese are known worldwide and can be purchased from the weekly farmers’ markets and delicatessans. There are numerous village restaurants, many in incredible scenic settings, serving authentic, seasonal cuisine and all can easily be reached by bicycle.
